Recently, I have started reading books. It takes me a lot of time to finish a book. I am a lazy reader — I pause, I stop, and sometimes I even start a new one without finishing the previous one. But for the last two weeks, I’ve been a bit more consistent. I’m making slow and steady progress.
I was reading The Ivory Throne by Manu S. Pillai. It’s about the history of Kerala and the princely state of Travancore. I do love history somewhat, so even though this book is hard to read for me, I enjoy it. The sheer amount of effort that goes into writing a book is thrilling. I don’t understand how authors do it — I can’t even think of something to write, even after reading a lot of research.
Anyway, I’m learning a lot of new words from this book. These are the 10 words I learned in the last two weeks:
- Incessant — Continuing without pause or interruption.
- Foliage — The leaves of plants, collectively.
- Veritable — Used to emphasize that something is truly or genuinely what it is described as.
- Vehemence — The display of strong passion, intensity, or forcefulness.
- Trepidation — A feeling of fear or anxiety about something that may happen.
- Gleaned — Gathered information or knowledge gradually, often from various sources.
- Conscientiously — Done carefully and thoroughly, with great attention to detail.
- Bequest — Something left to a person in a will.
- Incongruous — Not in harmony or keeping with the surroundings; unsuitable or inconsistent.
- Blasphemy — The act or offence of speaking sacrilegiously about God or sacred things; profane talk.
- Ephemeral — Lasting for a very short time.
- Languid — Displaying a disinclination for physical exertion; slow and relaxed.
- Pernicious — Having a harmful effect, especially in a gradual or subtle way.
- Ubiquitous — Present, appearing, or found everywhere.
